Scholarship Information

Bp. Wurm Council Programs

Annually, the Council awards four, $200 scholarships, two Robert Heidenfelder Scholarships at Christ the King Grade School, and two George Jacobs Scholarships at Holy Trinity Grade School, to defray the tuition for attendance at a local Catholic high school. Students are nominated by their schools.

Missouri State Council Programs

Eleven different scholarship in five programs are offered by the Missouri State Council. To be eligible, the applicant must be a member of the Missouri Knights of Columbus in good standing; the son, daughter, legal ward, or wife of a member of the Knights of Columbus in good standing living or at the time of his death; or a Squire or Columbus Girl in good standing. Each scholarship has an annual with a value of $1000 each, payable as $500 each semester. Additional information, including an application is available. Applications are due on February 15. The five programs are:

  • 4 Luke E. Hart Memorial Scholarships are awarded to recipients who must attend one of the branches of the University of Missouri, in Columbia, St. Louis, Rolla, or Kansas City.

  • 3 Missouri State Scholarships are awarded. Recipients may attend any accredited university, college, or technical school beyond high school.

  • 1 Cardinal Bernard F. Law Scholarship is awarded to a recipients who must attend an accredited seminary, university, or college of his/her choice for studying for a vocation to the religious life.

  • 2 Vocation Scholarships are awarded to recipients who may attend an accredited seminary, university, or college of his/her choice for studying for a vocation to the religious life. If no applications are received from individuals desiring to attend a seminary, or be a postulant in a religious community, then these scholarships may be awarded to individuals wishing to attend any other accredited university or college, with preferences given to those attending a Catholic institution.

  • 1 Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship is awarded to a member of the State Ladies Auxiliary. She may attend any type of higher education, university, college, or technical school for the betterment of her life.

    Supreme Council programs

    Eight different scholarship programs are offered by the Supreme Council in the United States. Applicants must apply to a Catholic college or university. Undergraduate scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen and are normally renewed for a total of four years. Scholarship applications are available after October 1, and are due by March 1. Additional information, including a request for an application is available. The eight programs offered are:

  • 62 Fourth Degree Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarships awarded annually to U.S. students. Twelve scholarships are available at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Fifty scholarships are available to students entering other Catholic colleges or Catholic universities in the United States. An applicant must be entering the freshman year of an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor's degree at a Catholic college or university in the United States. A member in good standing of the Knights of Columbus, the son or daughter of such a member or deceased member, or a member in good standing of the Columbian Squires, and is not limited to Fourth Degree members. The scholarships of $1,500 each are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and are renewable each year of study, pending satisfactory academic performance, to a total of four years.

  • The Father Michael J. McGivney and Bishop Thomas V. Daily Vocations Scholarships Funds provide scholarships to students in the first four years of theology pursuing a vocation to the priesthood. In 2005 - 2006, 41 new scholarships were awarded. The Father McGivney scholarships are awarded on the basis of need and applicants must provide information to establish financial need. Bishop Daily scholarships are merit based and applicants must include a copy of their most recent transcript and two letters of recommendation. Each grant of $2,500 for tuition, room and board is renewable up to a maximum of four years upon evidence of continued enrollment and eligibility. The scholarship is not in effect during any year of pastoral internship. An applicant having appropriate ecclesiastical approval, accepted at a major seminary and studying for a diocese or religious institute in the United States, its territories, or Canada is eligible. Preference is given, but is not limited to, applicants who are members of the Knights of Columbus or who are the sons of Knights. Applications for vocations scholarships are due June 1.

  • 36 John W. McDevitt (Fourth Degree) Scholarships awarded annually to applicants entering the freshman year of undergraduate study at a Catholic college or university in the United States, and a member in good standing of the Knights of Columbus or the wife, widow, son or daughter of such a member or deceased member, and is not limited to Fourth Degree members. These academic-based scholarships of $1,500 each.

  • The Francis P. Matthews and John E. Swift Educational Trust Fund provides scholarships for dependent children of a member in good standing who died or became permanently and totally disabled while serving in the military from a cause connected directly with military service during a period of conflict, or as a result of criminal violence directed against him while in the lawful performance of his duties as a full-time firefighter or full-time law enforcement officer. They are for undergraduate studies in a program leading to a bachelor’s degree at a Catholic college or university and include the amount not covered by other financial aid for tuition, room and board only. A candidate for benefits is required to submit supporting documents to establish eligibility. The Knights of Columbus membership record is verified at the Supreme Council Office.

  • Endowed Scholarships. The Knights of Columbus offers a limited number of endowed scholarships provided from earnings of funds established in the donors' names. In accepting these gifts, the Order's Board of Directors voted to administer endowed scholarships in conformance with the rules of the Fourth Degree Pro Deo and Pro Patria Scholarship program, subject to the donors' wishes. The Anthony J. LaBella Endowed Scholarships are awarded for academic excellence, while the Percy J. Johnson Endowed Scholarships are awarded to men and the Frank L. Goularte Endowed Scholarships to all students on the basis of financial need. Accordingly, a copy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) is required with the application.

  • Bishop Charles P. Greco Graduate Fellowships are awarded annually to students enrolled in a full-time master’s degree program designed for teachers of people with intellectual disabilities. The maximum amount of the grant is $2,000 payable to the university in amounts not to exceed $500 per semester. An applicant must be a member in good standing of the Knights of Columbus or the wife, son or daughter of such a member or deceased member.

  • Knights of Columbus Fellowships at The Catholic University of America. In 1907, at the instigation of the Most Rev. John Cardinal Glennon, Archbishop of St. Louis, the Knights of Columbus established an endowment fund at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. for graduate study leading to a master's or doctoral degree. The fellowships were designed chiefly to train exceptional students in graduate work in the arts and sciences, with particular reference to preparing graduates to teach at the university level. Fellowships cover tuition and an allowance for living expenses, and may be renewed annually for three years. Preference is given to a Knight, or the wife, son, daughter or sister of a Knight. The Graduate School of The Catholic University of America administers this fellowship program for applicants it has accepted for admission.

  • Sister Thea Bowman Foundation-Knights of Columbus Scholarships. In 1996, the Order's Board of Directors partnered with the Sister Thea Bowman Black Educational Foundation to establish a four-year grant in the amount of $37,500 per year to support deserving African-American students pursuing a Catholic college education. Recipients of these scholarships are not necessarily the sons or daughters of Knights.
